A Ministry Spanning More Than Forty Years
Lutheran Lakeside Camp is a beautiful wooded 133 acre site with 1/2 mile of lake shoreline and located two miles south of Spirit Lake, Iowa. The site was purchased in 1959 and has served Lutherans from across Iowa through the camping and retreat ministry that has been developed through the years.
Today's ministry at Lutheran Lakeside includes summer Bible camp for children and youth; fall, winter and spring retreats for youth and adults and week long summer day camps conducted in communities across Iowa.
Lutheran Lakeside accommodations include cottages and cabins that can house up to 200 people at a time from May to September, a winterized retreat lodge that can accommodate up to 40 participants and a campground with hookups and available for RV and tent campers.
The "Fed by the Water" campaign will provide the funds needed to construct a new, fully modern and winterized kitchen and dining facility to serve all participants in every season of the year.
Well-Used and Worn Facilities Continue to Serve
Lutheran Lakeside camp is blessed with a beautiful, wooded site and fine lake shoreline and waterfront. Tens of thousands of youth and adults have enjoyed this great natural setting through the years. Their lives have been enriched through the Christ centered programs they have experienced.
These thousands of participants and decades of use have taken their toll on the facilities of the camp. Many were designed only for summer use and many of Lutheran Lakeside's programs and activities now are provided during all seasons of the year.
Other facilities are simply worn out and need significant renovation or replacement. New facilities are needed for year round programs for adults and seniors, an ever increasing portion of the population.
The dining hall is too small to provide kitchen and dining service to the 200 campers and staff that often fill the camp during summer weeks. Food storage and preparation areas are too small. The roof has ongoing water leakage problems. And, finally, the current dining hall was built as a summer only facility and cannot serve the many late fall, winter and early spring programs now offered at Lutheran Lakeside.
The "Fed by the Water" campaign will first address needs for better kitchen and dining facilities for all Lutheran Lakeside participants.
"Fed By The Water" - A Campaign to Begin The Renewal of Lutheran Lakeside's Facilities
In recent years Lutheran Lakeside's ministry has shown renewed vigor and increased participation from across Iowa. Participants now include not only a growing number of children and youth each summer but also adults, families and seniors. Programs are offered and conducted throughout the year.
As this program ministry has been renewed the Lutheran Lakeside Board has also developed a master plan to begin the renewal of the facilities that host thousands of participants each year.
The first project of this effort is the construction of a modern, fully winterized kitchen and dining facility that will seat 200 for meals as well as provide adequate kitchen and food storage space for all of Lutheran Lakeside's programs.
The "Fed by the Water" campaign will provide the funds for this new facility. With a goal of $1 million, the campaign will require the generous gifts of families from congregations across Iowa.
